35 YEARS OF SINUS

From the foundation until today

The story of Sinus began in 1980 when Thorsten Schmidt’s older brother played in a band and was looking for a light man for the 1st Kranichstein Rock Festival. Thorsten, just eleven years old at the time, didn’t hesitate. With a great affinity for technology and a dose of youthful exuberance, he built a “light console” from a few light switches in his father’s workshop. A moment that not only lit up the Kranichstein Rock Festival, but also ignited the spark of a lifelong passion in Thorsten.

Thorsten Schmidt began working as a DJ at a young age in 1984. He not only built his first small systems, but also rented them out to friends. The workshop at home soon became too small, so Thorsten converted his parents’ garage into a larger technical warehouse and office. A youthful entrepreneurial spirit that laid the foundation for Sinus Event-Technik.

Thorsten Schmidt completed his training as a radio and television technician in 1986, graduating as one of the best in his guild. This time not only honed his technical know-how, but also consolidated his job as a specialist in a rapidly developing industry.

1989 was the year in which SINUS Licht-, Ton- und Bühnentechnik officially saw the light of day. A milestone born out of a passion for music and technology and the desire to combine the two to create extraordinary experiences.

In 1992, Thorsten Schmidt discovered the world of musicals with his technical know-how and his passion for music. His journey began with the “Projekt Jugend und Theater Darmstadt e.V.”, where he brought the musical Räuber Hotzenplotz to life. This collaboration, with founder Matthias Edeling, was the prelude to a series of further successful musical performances that captivated the Rhine-Main region. The musical “Linie1” was created in 1993, followed by “Dschungelbuch” in 1995 and “Hasan Schmidt” in 1996. Thorsten Schmidt was lighting up the stages at the time with his talent for technology.

The German band “Tobsucht” was founded in 1995. Thorsten Schmidt accompanied the band with his lightshow at many live performances at various festivals and concerts throughout Germany. One of her best-known songs was “Zum Lachen in den Keller gehen”. Tobsucht was known for their intense live shows, where they combined their music with visual effects and a strong stage presence.

The expansion of Sinus Event-Technik continued in 1996. The limits of what was feasible were once again exceeded when the second technology garage in Darmstadt Arheilgen was bursting at the seams. This moment of need led to a crucial decision: Thorsten Schmidt turned his passionate hobby into a real business. The construction of his own technical warehouse in Frankfurter Landstraße, planned and implemented with the support of his father Helmut Schmidt, was a decisive step in the expansion of the company. The expansion of Sinus Event-Technik picked up speed. The ability to take on more and larger projects required the support of freelance and soon permanent staff, which significantly expanded Sinus’ internal dynamics and capabilities. The recognition by agencies and the establishment as a creative and professional technical consultant in the fields of lighting, sound and stage technology enabled Sinus to build up an extensive customer base. The specialization in the implementation of corporate events is reflected not only in the ability to realize creative and technically demanding projects, but also in the reliability and quality of the work delivered by Sinus.

In 1997, Sinus Event-Technik set a clear signal for the future: the investment in head-mounted spotlights was not only an expansion of the technical inventory, but also a commitment to innovation and quality. This technology enabled Sinus to take events to a new level, with breathtaking visual effects and unprecedented flexibility in the design of light shows.

Moving Head

The history of Sinus Event-Technik is a continuous journey of growth and innovation. 1999, a year that was not only of great importance to founder Thorsten Schmidt in his private life, but also heralded a new era for Sinus Event-Technik in business. Due to the enormous growth of the rental park and the need for more workplaces, a move was imminent. The search for a new location for Thorsten’s wedding celebration led him to an empty warehouse at Wittichstraße 7 in Darmstadt. The 700 square meter space was not only the setting for an unforgettable wedding celebration, but also the start of a new chapter for the company. Shortly after the celebration, the move began and, under the planning of father Helmut Schmidt, the new company headquarters became a reality. With the introduction of the first real merchandise management system, Sinus Event-Technik also took a big step forward in the organizational area in order to be able to optimally handle the “Rental / DryHire” area.

1999

The next important milestone comes in 2001: the transformation into a limited company. This not only reflects the solid growth and professionalization of the company, but also the confidence in the future and Thorsten Schmidt’s expansion plans.

With the introduction of video and image technology in 2002, Sinus expanded its range of products and services in response to changing market and customer requirements. This strategic decision made it possible to develop into a full-service provider for event technology and to tap into new customer segments.

2012 was another year of growth and investment. Sinus Event-Technik invested an impressive sum of around €600,000 in sound, lighting, stage and video technology this year alone.

The continuous maintenance of the growing rental fleet and the rapid handling of repairs for customers was ensured by the permanent staffing of the Sinus workshop in 2009. This strategic decision not only strengthened the internal infrastructure, but also made a clear statement to customers about quality and reliability.

The year 2014 was dominated by the 25th anniversary of Sinus Event-Technik. A quarter of a century full of passion, innovation and success, which we duly celebrated with our customers, partners and employees. The introduction of the position of Operations Manager this year was a strategic step to further structure the growth of Sinus and to secure and further expand our high quality standards.

2017 was another significant year, particularly due to the opening of our own wood workshop. This enabled us to implement customized and creative solutions for customer projects and offer comprehensive services from a single source.

The year 2018 was characterized by strategic decisions for further growth. The renewed lack of space made a third move unavoidable. After an intensive search, Thorsten Schmidt decided on a suitable property in Mörfelden-Walldorf, ideally located near Frankfurt and directly on the A5. This location not only offered the necessary spatial capacity, but also optimal logistical connections. The purchase of the property with office building and warehouse as well as the construction of an additional 700 square meter, two-storey order picking hall including three loading docks should optimally equip us for the future.

In 2019, Sinus Event-Technik set a strong example for sustainability. With the complete conversion of the company building to LED lighting and the installation of a home automation system to control all heating systems, we have taken important steps to reduce our ecological footprint. The installation of a 100kW photovoltaic system on the company roof and the installation of six electric charging stations up to 22kW in the same year were a further step in this direction.

2020 was an unprecedented challenge for many industries, including the events industry. The outbreak of the global pandemic threatened to bring the sixth-largest economic sector to the brink of collapse. But in these difficult times, Sinus showed a remarkable ability to rethink and adapt quickly. Instead of resignation, the Sinus team chose the path of innovation: streaming became the new core of our range of services. In May 2020, we immediately invested in professional studio technology and turned our sinus.studio in Mörfelden-Walldorf into the center of digital events. From annual general meetings and award ceremonies to online award ceremonies with live broadcasts to the award winners – Sinus offered its customers a variety of streaming services. Customers from various industries such as the automotive industry, banking and the pharmaceutical sector were supported. The switch to digital formats not only proved successful in overcoming the crisis, but also paved the way for the future. In the same year, Sinus set up a temporary TV studio in Cologne to conduct the JUVE Awards digitally. This initiative underlined our ability to develop innovative solutions and realize excellent events even under difficult conditions.

With the gradual return to a new normality, the purely digital format developed into the hybrid format. Sine played an important role in this by facilitating events where part of the audience could be physically present while another part was digitally connected. This flexibility and technical expertise enabled us to successfully stage a wide range of events in the new format and gradually move back to live events. The infrastructure for electromobility at the company site was also expanded: Six charging stations have been turned into eleven, which can still be used free of charge by employees and customers.

Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic, Sinus recorded the strongest year in its history in terms of sales in 2022. The strong demand for live events, which were postponed during the pandemic, led to a real boom.
